1999 BMW 540i, 127k miles, salvage title, $1995. It’s a dealer sales, so the law says it runs, and passes CA Smog and safety...And you can believe as much of that as you please.

that’s a nice case of ‘’run it until something breaks and then ditch it for parts’’.
... So if you want to get rid of the engine, give me a call!

Sure, if it is a basket case part it out.

I know a guy who’d take the engine out of that and put it in an E34.

It’s a dealer sale, so according to CA law it has to pass safety and smog. So, it currently runs.
For whatever that’s worth.

I’ve had a ‘98 540i, they fall apart at that many miles so CP

I know a guy who would take the engine and put it in a E36 (me!).
So yeah, there’s definitely a demand for parting out this car.

either that or a 6-cyl (m3).
Or I go full retard and stuff a Ford 5.0 HO in it (stupidly cheap, huge aftermarket and easy installation):

S54’s go for $4k these days (Would not bang) and S52’s are around $1.2-$1.5. But boosted M52 strokers w/ M54 rotating assemblies. . . Mmmmm
I often thought about putting a 302 w/ the flipped headers on mine, but a simple S52 (+5sp ZF) is likely my future swap.

NP depending on rust and condition of timing chain tensioners. Since rust shouldn’t be an issue in this area I don’t see why not as long as you prepare to maintain them.
